"Serpent on a Pole" is inspired by a passage from the Old Testament that actually points to Jesus' crucifixion. In Numbers 21:8-9, the scripture says, "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.' So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived." The serpent on a pole symbolizes the sins Jesus bore at the cross. And anyone who looks to him in faith shall receive eternal life.
When Jesus took his last breath, the curtain of the temple was torn from top to bottom. It signifies that we finally have direct access to the kingdom. And it is not by works but through faith alone. On the right side of the curtain, you can see the crucifixion being held at Golgotha (Place of the Skull). The sun darkened, and the earth shook. On the left side of the curtain, you can see the bodies that rose to life and appeared to many people. This whole sequence of events can be found in Matthew 27:32-51.
